Parent’s Choices, Parent’s Voices: Inspired Advocacy

The most effective advocates for Head Start education are Head Start parents. They are engaged in Head Start on three important levels: as advocates for their children, as leaders in local programs and as collaborators to advance services for the next class of Head Start families. When parents succeed, their children succeed. That is the Head Start advantage—and, more than ever, this story needs telling everywhere: in the media and in the hallways of government. Only parents can communicate with both the passion and experience that explains the impact of Head Start on children.

For parents who want to become more effective communicators, Region 9 Head Start Association is creating an Advocacy Training program so parents can engage in dialogue in the community, with allies and office holders—the people who hold the purse strings.

Importantly, the first participants trained will make up the nucleus of a new, inspiring movement in Region 9. You will be the leaders of a group of parents and other allies who will serve as Ambassadors—encouraging other parents to join you, rallying other Head Start supporters to step up, and conveying the message of the Head Start Advantage where it’s needed most and when it’s needed most.

A one-day boot camp, the Advocacy Training program is designed for Head Start’s most impassioned parents, community advocates and allies. The Head Start Ambassador experience is planned to provide attendees with a tool box of resources to take their advocacy efforts to the next level—in their neighborhoods, local government meetings, at the state capitol and in Washington D.C.

The most successful candidates will be focused on creating an environment of positive change to benefit our children and families.  Attendees must be effective networkers, open to others ideas and willing to look out for solutions—big and small.

The core of the training experience is:

  • Self-advocacy: speaking up and building your story;
  • Engage the other, assess the environment, and establish agreements;
  • Build a collaborative network for action, challenge and create solutions;
  • Celebrate small wins and promote individual contributions.

The training program will meet in July of 2017.  Our goal is to prepare advocates for Fall and Winter national meetings in Washington D.C. and year-round in their state’s capitol.
