As part of our Early Childhood STEM Week, we will be celebrating our STEM Heros! These are individuals who create Early Childhood STEM opportunities for learning and fun in local communities. Here is one example – meet Troy the Xray Boy!Troy says “Head Start helped make my dream a reality and I’ve been working as a radiologic technologist at the Maui Medical Group for 16 years now! In my free time, I like to give back by visiting Head Start locations to teach kids about x-ray, ultrasound, CT & MRI. Troy was recognized as Maui’s 2017-2018 Volunteer of the Year.
Jose Hernandez rose from the farm fields of the Central Valley to become an astronaut aboard NASA’s flight to the International Space Station in 2009.
Jose presents at several schools in the Stockton area inspiring many.
Ahmed Muhammad’s achievements represent both extraordinary personal discipline and the power of opportunity when talent is nurtured. Growing up in Oakland, he excelled academically from a young age, but what truly set him apart was his drive to uplift others while he pursued excellence himself. Ahmed was a keynote speaker for our EC STEM Institute in 2021.

I have been to management workshops, not leadership training. This has totally changed my perspective and encouraged me to propel forward in developing my skills.
I am honored and humbled to be a recipient of the Head Start WEST’s Legacy Scholarship. The scholarship helped me get one step closer to achieving my goal of becoming a Head Start Director.
