INNOVATIONS – Workforce Development: Parent to Teacher Program – Growing Our Own
July 10, 2019 @ 3:00 pm - 4:00 pm PDT

Presented by Veronica Garcia & Tony Jordan – Stanislaus County Office of Education
PIR and other data showed a California grantee that one-third of its existing staff were former Head Start parents or children. So the decision was made to grow its own workforce by investing in current Head Start Parents and providing them with the baseline education they need to fill existing classroom vacancies.
Due to the staffing shortage and need for substitutes, the Parent to Teacher Program was developed with the end goal of having the participants complete the four core Child Development courses needed (12 units) including 150 volunteer hours for the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing Associate Teacher Permit, which is equivalent to the National Child Development Associate (CDA) credential. Learn how a Head Start program partnered with local institutions of higher learning (i.e. colleges) to make this happen. In less than one year, they have had 60 parents complete the program and 17 of them already employed at sites. It has been a huge success! They will provide step by step guidance and simple forms/processes used in their program. There will also be a section dedicated to questions and answers. Sign up for the webinar and hear how you can replicate this program in your area.
