Emergency Response Strategies to Support Young Children and Families during COVID-19, in partnership with continued.com

Learn concrete practical strategies to support young children and families impacted by the stress and effects of social distancing resulting from COVID-19, in partnership with continued.com.

Learning Outcomes:

  1. After this course, participants will be able to identify practical strategies for maintaining concrete social support for families and children while programs are closed, and everyone is requested to practice social distancing.
  2. After this course, participants will be able to explain different approaches that programs and communities are using to ensure that children’s and families’ basic needs (food, shelter, child care) are being met during this global pandemic.
  3. After this course, participants will be able to describe several strategies adults can use to promote resilience, buffer children’s stress and reduce long term adverse effects resulting from the stress associated with COVID-19.

Julie Kurtz is the founder and CEO of Center for Optimal Brain Integration™ providing trauma, resilience and social-emotional training, consultation and support services nationally. She is a co-author with Dr. Nicholson of Trauma-Informed Practices for Early Childhood Educators: Relationship-Based Approaches that Support Healing and Build Resilience in Young Children (2019) and the Co-Author with Dr. Nicholson and Dr. Wesley of: Culturally Responsive Self-Care for Early Childhood Educators (2019). Julie Kurtz is the creator of the phone/tablet Application (APP) Trigger Stop: Sensory and Emotional Check-In designed specifically for children ages 3-8 years to promote sensory and emotional literacy and to support self-regulation.

Julie Nicholson, Ph.D. is a Professor of Practice in the School of Education at Mills College, Senior Fellow for Childhood Education International, Co-Founder of the new Center for Equity in Early Childhood Education and the Chief Strategy Officer for Center for Optimal Brain Integration™. Dr. Nicholson conducts community-engaged scholarship and her teaching, research and publications emphasize a range of topics related to social justice and equity especially leadership, racial and gender justice and the impact of trauma on children, adults and systems. She has published over 30 research articles in peer reviewed journals and many books including titles examining trauma-informed practice and culturally responsive self-care for early educators.

LaWanda Wesley, Ed.D. earned a doctoral degree in Educational Leadership and Management with a concentration in Higher Education from Drexel University. She is Co-Director of the Center for Equity in Early Childhood Education and Director of Quality Enhancement and Professional Development of Early Education for Oakland Unified School District.  She is dedicated to changing the lives of all children, especially those from communities of color, poverty, and furthest reach from opportunity.  Dr. Wesley is the co-author of the second book in the trauma series called Culturally Responsive Self-Care for Early Childhood Educators.  She trains on trauma modules 100 and 200 in the series and trauma informed care topics that have a lens of equity and justice.
