SUMMARY:Advancing Advocacy: Training 4 Trainer
DESCRIPTION:Why advocacy?\n\nThe development of skills to advocate for children\, families\, and communities is at the heart of the Head Start Movement. Since its inception in 1965\, Head Start had been focused on the empowerment of individuals to create a better more hopeful\, and just life for all. \nHead Start’s multi-generational\, locally designed\, and responsive operations have been well served by four pillars – Child Development – Family Engagement – Health and Social Services – Community Action. For 55 plus years\, Project Head Start has advanced by the determined advocacy of our constituents and allies. In addition\, lessons and skills gained during our constituent’s time in the program has continued to be a profound resource as those individuals navigated the K-12 Education system\, community development projects\, and local governmental structures. \nWe find Head Start alumni in all sectors – business to government\, sports to entertainment\, and all around us in local agencies are Head Start heroes. \nWhat will this T4T cover? \n\nA nine-week cohort will cover essential skills for all who support community engagement and advocacy. The course will equip teams to replicate similar training at the local level within parent leadership circles\, policy council\, and site committees. \nUtilizing online learning platforms\, Cafe format for discussion\, and a rich exchange of materials\, this T4T will provide participants an excellent framework to support parent leadership\, civic participation\, and advocacy at the local level. \nHSW’s Training West is in partnership with Child360 – is launching a new and innovative approach to support program staff advancing advocacy skill in parent leaders in their local community. \nThis 9-week cohort will start March 29\, 2021\, and conclude July 19\, 2021. \nRegistration includes two staff and one parent leader per team. The fee for HSW Members is $2250 per team of 3\, non-member agencies $2500 per team of 3. \nRegistration is limited to 10 teams. \n When are the trainings and cafes planned?\nAll meetings are scheduled online\, 10-12 noon PST \nWeek 1 – March 29\, 2021 \nWeek 2 – April 2\, 2021\, Café – April 12\, 2021 \nWeek 3 – April 16\, 2021\, Café – April 26\, 2021 \nWeek 4 – April 30\, 2021\, Café – May 10\, 2021 \nWeek 5 – May 14\, 2021\, Café – May 24\, 2021 \nWeek 6 – May 28\, 2021\, Café – June 7\, 2021 \nWeek 7 – June 11\, 2021\, Café – June 21\, 2021 \nWeek 8 – June 25\, 2021\, Café – July 6\, 2021 \nWeek 9 – July 9\, 2021\, Café July 19\, 2021 \nWho will facilitate the sessions?\nIn partnership with Child360\, HSW’s Advancing Advocacy will be led by two exceptional facilitators. Click here to learn more about them. \n \nQuestions?\nPlease contact us at headstartr9@region9hsa.org or call 916-259-0971.

SUMMARY:Solutions Webinar - Using Culturally Responsive Children’s Books to Support Family Engagement
DESCRIPTION:This session is brought to you in partnership with Raising a Reader. \nWhat does it mean to be ‘culturally responsive’ and how do I include it in my work with families? This workshop will define what it means to be culturally responsive\, including the investigation of family engagement practices and tools that acknowledge and appreciate the home cultures of all families. Children’s books will be investigated as an important tool to bridge the connection between educators and families. We will further explore how to select and build a library of books that represents the interest and diversity of the families. Finally\, we will review Raising A Reader\, a family engagement and early literacy program that has demonstrated positive results in changing family behaviors\, as a case study for including cultural responsivity in your family engagement initiatives. \nParticipants will understand the importance of using culturally responsive children’s books as a tool to increase meaningful family engagement. \nClick here to register

SUMMARY:Solutions Webinar - How to Increase & Monitor Family Engagement (and In-Kind) While We're Virtual
DESCRIPTION: \nThis session is brought to you in partnership with Kindly. \nPresented by Jasmine Taylor\, President & CEO – Kindly. \nIn the midst of a pandemic\, agencies have spent the past year pivoting to online learning; leaving many administrators wondering what family engagement actually looks like at home. The good news is\, with your assistance\, parents have been given tools\, guidance and support to help with their little one’s continued development during this unprecedented time. But how do you capture this engagement (and the tons of in-kind they’ve generated in the process)? One agency we spoke with asks parents to take photos of their reading logs then text them to staff to process and manage. Text messages from hundreds of families each week have to pass through the hands of multiple staff members\, get translated into emails then input into their system to be calculated manually. Thankfully\, there’s a better way! FINALLY\, there is an in-kind management software combined with child development and family engagement in ONE POWERFUL system! \nKindly is much more than just an accounting software. This one-of-a-kind system\, was created by education experts\, who faced the challenges of low staff and family engagement\, inaccurate\, untimely reporting and the headache of manual processing. They also saw an opportunity to help parents become even more active in their babies’ development. Our platform creates a space where parents\, staff and agency leaders can work together virtually\, in the Kindly Hub\, to improve child development outcomes in a fast and easy way! \nThe Las Vegas agency that piloted this new system went from generating $236\,000 annually to $1M in their first year of using the Kindly system. They quadrupled their in-kind and their family engagement. Thanks to this new innovative software\, in-kind is now a paperless process that you can track and monitor globally in real time. \nTop Features: \n– A proven system designed to optimize child development\, designed according to each child’s individualized learning plan \n– A library of developmentally appropriate activities for parents to choose from based on the Early Learning Outcomes Framework (ELOF) \n– An easy-to-use parent portal where families can track and submit their activities online\, from any device\, including phones\, tablets or computers \n– Agency dashboards to monitor progress with reports for administrators\, center directors\, key staff and teachers \n– Robust reporting features with templates for weekly\, monthly and annual reports \n– Tools for staff training and technical assistance regarding family engagement and in-kind education \n– An in-kind calculator to help you set an agency goal that each family can be a part of \nKindly is quickly becoming the go-to technology for the Head Start sector. Join us for this Solutions Webinar to learn how you can make it easy for parents and volunteers to engage and simple for staff to monitor their growth. \nCLICK HERE TO REGISTER

SUMMARY:Evidence Says! Webinar Series - Early Childhood STEM
DESCRIPTION:What does the evidence say about early childhood STEM education? First\, that it’s everywhere\, and whether teachers know it or not they’re already doing it! It only takes a little extra planning and intentionality to deepen and extend the early STEM experiences that are already happening. And when it’s done well\, early STEM captures children’s attention—taking advantage of their natural drive to understand the world around them—engages children in hands-on minds-on activities\, models the inquiry cycle and investigation process\, and incorporates learning across school readiness domains (i.e.\, language & literacy\, social-emotional development\, and approaches to learning). \nIn this webinar\, Andres Bustamante—Assistant Professor from UC Irvine’s School of Education—will overview the latest research in early STEM education\, provide examples of high-quality programs and activities across each of the four areas of STEM (Science\, Technology\, Engineering\, & Math)\, and recommend accessible frameworks and resources to support educators looking to increase STEM learning opportunities in their classrooms. \nCLICK HERE TO LEARN MORE
