If your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more and become more, you are a leader.—John Quincy Adams

Running a Head Start Association means juggling the needs of children, parents and staff as well as the myriad of tasks needed to operate any business organization. Meanwhile, Head Start agencies are experiencing enormous stress and additional uncertainty due to re-competition, budget restrictions and increased poverty in families. This workshop will give you super powers—how to achieve the extraordinary while overcoming the overwhelming.

A deep-dive program that requires homework completed ahead of time, The Leadership Challenge for Head Start Managers and Directors is based upon The Five Practices of Exemplary Leadership, developed by Jim Kouzes and Berry Posner. Their Leadership Challenge Model is the most recognized standard of leadership excellence. In demystifying the leadership concept and presenting it as a set of learnable behaviors, Kouzes and Posner will show how leadership development is self-development: It takes practice—and is both an aspiration and a choice.

Among the features of this leadership training:

  • A series of creative learning activities and exercises to develop the 10 commitments and the 30 behaviors of The Leadership Challenge Model.
  • Pre-event homework involving a Leadership Practices Inventory (LPI): Participants will complete a short survey online and will also choose approximately 10 people to complete the LPI so as to receive feedback on their leadership behaviors.
  • Attendance by a mixture of professionals executive directors, deputy directors, content specialists education specialists, community partners and other emerging leaders benefit from the training and enhance its experience. (Material used is not Head Start-driven.)
  • As a highly individual personal development opportunity, discoveries made during the training also apply to participants’ daily lives to improve workplace productivity and relationships.

“I really enjoyed this time. I thought it would be invasive, but it was informative as well as tactfully executed.”

Charity Woods from Pinal Gila Community Child Services

“The pre-conference LPI and worksheets seemed like a lot of work but now that I’m here, it was  worth it. The 360 is powerful and meaningful.”

Claudia Sabel from Pinal Gila Community Child Services

“A great workshop to motivate your leaders!”

Nancy Castle from Child Crisis Arizona

“I have been to management workshops, not leadership training. This has totally changed my perspective and encouraged me to propel forward in developing my skills.”

Coaching VIP

After participants receive their 360-degree feedback and complete The Leadership Challenge two-day training experience, three individual coaching sessions will be scheduled with each participant to occur over the upcoming ten weeks.

The coaching will occur via three one-hour telephone calls using a cognitive-behavioral, solution-focused approach.  As the coach and participant review, assess and evaluate the feedback, the coach will lead each participant through a series of questions and customized discussions about how feedback may be interpreted and how the participant’s future leadership may benefit from the feedback that has been provided.

Through the action-oriented conversations, coaching will be conducted by professional executive coaches who do not work internally within the organizations where the Head Start leaders are employed.  Coaching will be aimed at enhancing goal attainment, increasing resilience and workplace well-being while reducing individual stress as these leaders implement changes within their organizations.  Time will be provided, between coaching sessions, for participants to try out new ideas and/or different leadership behaviors and support will be provided to build and inspire momentum.

In the past, participants have reported that coaching that continues after The Leadership Challenge has supported them in increasing self-confidence and personal insights, built management skills and helped participants to positively and actively contribute to supporting others within their organizations in adjusting to important organizational changes.
