Head Start Enrollment 90,012

The Golden State ranks as the fifth largest economy in the world. But with California’s population of 39.5 million, there are more than a half million at-risk children under age five. Of those, only 38% of three-and four-year old had access to Head Start. And only 4% of children under three had access to Early Head Start.

Most Head Start programs are in the California’s larger cities, but because the state has a large agricultural industry that attracts migrant workers, there are 10 migrant/season Head Start programs providing vital education, socialization and health services to more than 6,600 children.
