A 45 minutes interactive webinar that explores literature as the foundation to support young children’s creative and critical thinking development. Participants will understand how books and storytelling can expand children’s learning and thinking opportunities which are essential 21st-century skills for future engineers. Connecting engineering concepts to intentional hands-on play-based activities, they will leave with a plan to implement creative and critical thinking strategies in their setting the next day!
Presenter Maria Teresa Ruiz initiated her journey as a Head Start Parent. She holds an MS in Interdisciplinary Studies, a BS in Psychology, and a Child Development Graduate Certificate enhancing her understanding and twenty-eight years of practice in the field of early childhood education. Maria Teresa has served as an ECE Teacher for 13 years. For the last fifteen years, as a Child Development Specialist, and as a STEAM coach for the last 7 years, She has supported professional development workshops disseminating evidence-based research for high-quality program improvement.
Back for a second time, this training series will consist of live, 90-minute sessions. These sessions will be recorded and will be made available for up-to 90-days to all registered participants. During this training series, we are offering Head Start, Earl Head Start educators, coordinators and support staff solutions to address many of the challenges facing our educational environments. Our presenters come from a variety of disciplines including mental health, education, occupational therapist, art family engagement specialist, as well as agency-based presenters. We will present a blend of sessions which highlight new research, proven strategies, and practical tools for positive solutions.
A three-day event offering participants with general sessions, breakout sessions, special events, and exhibit hall. We will be offering sessions in-person and virtual via pre-recorded.
A two-day, executive level leadership experience where personal development, workforce engagement, organization improvement and strategic planning come together.

For over 25 years, Early Head Start has served to elevate the hopes of families, provide foundational knowledge, and partner with them in critical times. Region 9 Head Start community gathers annually to challenge, enable, and celebrate the work of our community. From downtown Phoenix to the Pacific Islands, from homeless shelters and correctional facilities to early education centers, living rooms, and community spaces, and from staff who have master’s and doctoral degrees to those working part-time as caregivers – we encompass the Early Head Start community.
This academy targets individuals responsible for the oversight of one or more child development centers to help them align the operations of each site with the goals of the organization. Site Directors play a critical role for their agencies. They serve as the organizational link to the broader mission and as the representative of your programs to parents, neighbors, and staff.
This workshop will give you superpowers—how to achieve the extraordinary while overcoming the overwhelming. A deep-dive program that is based upon The Five Practices of Exemplary Leadership, developed by Jim Kouzes and Berry Posner. Their Leadership Challenge Model is the most recognized standard of leadership excellence.
R9HSA’s Early Childhood STEM Institute is focused on bringing our community a fun and engaging experience to learn science principles in an interactive, hands-on approach, enabling Head Start education staff to teach about science principles appropriately and knowledgeably.
A strong Governance System is built on clear processes, adherence to requirements, and development of positive relationships between management and Governing Bodies, which are essential to support compliance, continuous improvement and innovation. This 2 hour interactive workshop will educate participants about the roles and responsibilities of Governing bodies including requirements and regulations. Additionally, this workshop will provide participants with the required Governing Body training in an overview of the Head Start Program Performance Standards (HSPPS) and in HSPPS’s eligibility, selection and enrollment requirements. This workshop is ideal for Policy Council and Governing Body members, as well as staff who design and/or support Governance systems and operations.
